Director of Endurance Tim Holmes, along with his wife Alice and children Tom and Emma have successfully completed their ‘Arctic 85’ Expedition across Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. The group traversed 85 miles of the Akshayuk Pass from Qik to Pang whilst pulling a 20 kg sledge each.
Throughout the 8-day expedition which was themed ’85 miles of discovery, 85 years of change’, the group endured -30-degree temperatures and winds of over 70mph which threatened to blow their tents away!
Alice Holmes’ grandfather Sir James Wordie, famous for his participation as geologist in Shackleton’s 1915 Trans-Antarctic Expedition, mapped remote parts of Baffin Island in 1937.
After the expedition, the family group were able to visit the local Innuit communities which the Wordie Expedition visited 85 years ago to discover more about the changes in the geography, climate of the area and learn about the challenges facing the communities that live in this very remote part of the world (less than 600 miles from the North Pole).
